SUMMARY:Power in the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:“Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 NRSVUE) \nWhen we are tired or weary and feel like fainting\, God promises to revive us and to raise us up – with strength like that of an eagle’s wings. This hope in God is sure and true because “The Lord is the everlasting God\, the creator of the ends of the earth – who doesn’t grow tired or weary.” (Isaiah 40.28) All of creation – the waters of the earth\, the night sky filled with stars\, the dust of the earth\, the mountains and hills – all creation reflects God’s glory (Isaiah 40.12\, 26). In God’s great love and compassion for humanity\, God gathers us all in loving arms\, lifting us up onto God’s lap (Isaiah 40.11). Who can compare with God!?!\nIn Isaiah 40\, the prophet Isaiah shares a word of hope and promise with God’s people who are living in exile. They were strangers in a strange land\, perhaps forgetting the steadfast promises of God to be their God – always! Like God’s people of old\, we too sometimes forget God’s abiding promise to be with us in Christ Jesus – always! DESCRIPTION:The fifth annual Midwinter Power in the Spirit online gathering will be held on February 3-5\, 2025! \nWe will learn how the words of I Corinthians 13:13\, “And now these three remain: faith\, hope\, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” relate to Mary\, Mother of Jesus\, Abraham\, and Mary of Bethany. These three major people in our Bible show how we can apply faith\, hope\, and love in our lives today. You will have the opportunity to participate in one of two workshops each evening relating to the theme of the evening. \nOur Bible study leaders will be Rev. Jessica Darty (Trinity\, Pulaski) on Monday night\, Edith Blake (St. Andrew\, Portsmouth) Power in the Spirit Coordinator on Tuesday night\, and Rev. Wes Smith (Zion\, Waynesboro) Power in the Spirit Coordinator on Wednesday night. DESCRIPTION:2023 Summer Power in the Spirit: Seeking and Finding \nPower in the Spirit will be at Roanoke College\, July 13-15\, 2023. \nIn the gospels\, Jesus draws crowds wherever he goes. People who would otherwise have nothing to do with each other are drawn together in the practice of seeking him. We will look at a vision of the church that has this kind of seeking at its center. Come and explore the theme of Seeking and Finding as it appears in Scripture and in our own journeys of faith. Together we will see how our seeking Jesus (and his seeking us) is the common ground we need to love one another across all the issues and life experiences that threaten to divide us. \nThe Rev. DESCRIPTION:As our world emerges from over a year of pandemic life\, many are hoping for a return to “normal.” The task before the Church is to focus our hopes in the right direction.
