DESCRIPTION:Roanoke College Lutheran Visit Day\nHello all Virginia Synod high school students and families! \nRoanoke College Lutheran Visit Day 2025 will take place Saturday\, Sept. 27\, 2025\, from 10am to 1:00 at Roanoke College. \nThis event offers an opportunity for high school students and parents to spend some time with Synod Youth Director Dave Delaney and Bishop Phyllis Milton\, along with Roanoke College admissions staff and Lutheran students of the Roanoke College community to learn about your Lutheran College on the territory of the Virginia Synod. \nWe will start at 10am in RC’s Antrim Chapel\, where prospective students will learn more about the Roanoke experience\, then move on to a tour of the beautiful campus\, enjoy a complimentary brunch thanks to Roanoke College Admissions\, meet and get to know other Lutheran high schoolers\, RC staff\, and students. \nIf you are a pastor or congregational leader reading this\, please reach out to the high-schoolers and their families in your congregation and encourage them to make the trip to Salem that day. \nPre-registration is not required\, but doing so will help us prepare for everyone to have a great day! DESCRIPTION:LAUNCH is an event for youth who have just graduated from high school. Its purpose is to give you a chance to take stock of where your faith life has led you so far and also to provide an opportunity to engage in discussion on matters of faith and life that are likely to face you as you move on to the next stage of your life\, whether it be the workforce\, military or other public service\, college\, or something else. \nIf you are a veteran of our Virginia Synod ELCA Youth Events (Lost and Found\, Winter Celebration\, Kairos\, etc.)\, you will find that this event is structured differently. We will spend our three full days together in a rhythm of worship\, informal presentations to the whole group\, small group discussions\, and individual reflections that engage the mind as well as the spirit.  Of course\, there will be time for fellowship and relaxation and enjoyable meal times together. \nAll LAUNCH Participants must agree to the provisions of the LAUNCH Covenant (click here to read) \nLAUNCH 2025 will be held July 20-24 (Sunday evening to Thursday noon) at Roanoke College. \nThe cost per participant is $130.  Click here to go to the online registration form. SUMMARY:Power in the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:“Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 NRSVUE) \nWhen we are tired or weary and feel like fainting\, God promises to revive us and to raise us up – with strength like that of an eagle’s wings. This hope in God is sure and true because “The Lord is the everlasting God\, the creator of the ends of the earth – who doesn’t grow tired or weary.” (Isaiah 40.28) All of creation – the waters of the earth\, the night sky filled with stars\, the dust of the earth\, the mountains and hills – all creation reflects God’s glory (Isaiah 40.12\, 26). In God’s great love and compassion for humanity\, God gathers us all in loving arms\, lifting us up onto God’s lap (Isaiah 40.11). Who can compare with God!?!\nIn Isaiah 40\, the prophet Isaiah shares a word of hope and promise with God’s people who are living in exile. They were strangers in a strange land\, perhaps forgetting the steadfast promises of God to be their God – always! Like God’s people of old\, we too sometimes forget God’s abiding promise to be with us in Christ Jesus – always! SUMMARY:Kairos
DESCRIPTION:Kairos is our annual week-long faith sharing event for youth who will be in 9th-12th grades in the fall!  \nThis year’s event will take place June 22-27\, 2025 (Sunday evening  through Friday noon) at Roanoke College in Salem\, VA. \nAbout Kairos:\nKairos is an event where youth and adults gather together for for lots of singing and skits and fun and friend-making and prayers\, then participants gather in small groups that meet throughout the week. There are so many beloved features of Kairos: event theme t-shirts\, Open Talent Mic Show\, faith testimonies\, comic relief\, reflection time\, prayer stations\, speed friending\, t-shirt fashion show\, and more!  \n\n(“Kairos” is the New Testament Greek word for “special time.” It is used whenever God’s people want to talk about a time of change\, of renewal\, of God’s special work in the believer and the community.) \nThis event is a chance for youth who are already committed to a life of faith to be part of a unique Christian community for an entire week\, to have a fresh experience of the grace and presence of God in that community\, and to develop habits for discipleship that can be taken home as they live out their baptismal call to be followers of Jesus. Unlike our weekend events (Lost & Found\, Winter Celebration)\, congregational adult advisors are not required to accompany youth to this event. SUMMARY:Youth Assembly
DESCRIPTION:The Virginia Synod Youth Assembly is the annual meeting of the Virginia Synod Lutheran Youth Organization\, to which all Lutheran Youth in grades 7-12 in the Virginia Synod automatically belong. The Virginia Synod LYO is also the group in Virginia that relates to ELCA Youth Ministries. The Youth Assembly meets at the same time as the Synod Main Assembly on the Roanoke College Campus. \nThe Youth Assembly did not meet in 2024\, but we *will* meet this year! Youth Assembly 2025 is scheduled for June 13-15\, 2025 (Friday noon to Sunday noon) at Roanoke College. \n \nThe Purpose of the Youth Assembly is: \n\nto give glory to God\, celebrate the good news of the gospel\, and nurture faith in the synod’s young leaders.\nto conduct the business of the Synodical Lutheran Youth Organization\, including the election of the LYO Board.\nto hear and explore the story of the church’s work beyond the congregations of the youth delegates and equip them to share and interpret those stories in their home contexts.\nto give voice to and encourage leadership among youth in the church.\n\nEach congregation of the VA Synod is invited to send up to four delegates to the Youth Assembly. Delegates may be in 7th through 12th grade. Board Members plan the next year’s Youth Assembly\, relate to ELCA Youth Ministries\, and serve on the Synod’s Youth Ministry Committee. Representatives from Grades 9-12 are elected and the 8th grade Representative is appointed\, along with multi-cultural and tAble representatives. There are two forms that must be completed and submitted either by mail or scan-and-email by May 1\, 2025:  A nomination form for youth and a LYO BOARD Pastor and parent recommendation form. Moderated by Co-Thread Leaders George Donovan and Pastor Colleen Hetrick\, this will be a time of openness\, learning and reflecting.  \n  \nParticipants may submit questions now through April 22. Questions can be about an LGBTQIA+ experience\, faith as an LGBTQIA+ person\, or a related topic. The moderators will recruit panel members and find trusted resources to answer as many of the questions submitted as possible. We hope attendees will also share their ideas and resources with one another for some holy cross-pollinating! \nRegistration information for the two dates is below. DESCRIPTION:7th Day is our annual overnight faith sharing event for youth in 5th and 6th grades and their adult advisors.  In 2025\, 7th Day will take place from noon Saturday\, March 1st to 1:30 Sunday\, March 2nd at Eagle Eyrie Conference Center. \nDuring the weekend\, each youth participant is part of a “Shepherd Group” with 5-6 other youth and adult leaders. Along with other Shepherd Groups\, participants will explore a story of the Bible through drama\, games\, crafts\, and music. Then everyone is together in a large group setting for singing\, worship\, and a presentation from our 7th Day Planning Group youth! The book strikes a balance between defeatism and overconfidence\, written about by folks who genuinely want us to better know what we are talking about when we talk about climate change. This study will deepen participants’ understanding of climate change.  \nClimate is an issue that touches everything. Its study involves history\, culture\, economics\, law and justice issues\, race and gender politics\, and so many branches of science. There are so many facets to look at\, from the state of the climate movement\, the shift to renewable energy\, and the policy issues being decided at every level of government. This book touches on many of the topics in timely fashion with information that we need now\, especially heading into the voting booths this November. \nJoin us in reading the material and come with questions of your own!  The discussion sessions will be recorded\, but will not be immediately ready for review the next week. DESCRIPTION:The Metro D.C. Synod’s candidacy committee invites anyone feeling called to ministry or looking for a space to actively discern their call to join the Fall Discernment Cohort. We are excited to offer this space for holy listening\, discernment\, and pondering in partnership with the Virginia Synod. \nThe cohort will meet on Zoom from 5:00–6:00 PM on the first Thursday of the month beginning August 1\, 2024\, and running through January 2025.
