DESCRIPTION:The fifth annual Midwinter Power in the Spirit online gathering will be held on February 3-5\, 2025! \nWe will learn how the words of I Corinthians 13:13\, “And now these three remain: faith\, hope\, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” relate to Mary\, Mother of Jesus\, Abraham\, and Mary of Bethany. These three major people in our Bible show how we can apply faith\, hope\, and love in our lives today. You will have the opportunity to participate in one of two workshops each evening relating to the theme of the evening. \nOur Bible study leaders will be Rev. Jessica Darty (Trinity\, Pulaski) on Monday night\, Edith Blake (St. Andrew\, Portsmouth) Power in the Spirit Coordinator on Tuesday night\, and Rev. The Justice for Women Tapestry Thread invites you to learn with them about the obstacles that women still face in healthcare and education about their own bodies\, where there is hope for change\, and how communities of faith can help advocate.  \nDuring the month of November and early December\, receive emails with interviews with healthcare professionals and educators as well as with women who have experienced trouble in receiving the care they need. You can read and learn at your own pace. DESCRIPTION:Not Too Late Book Study \nCare for Creation Tapestry Thread \nWednesdays\, October 9\, 16\, 23  \n7pm – Zoom  \n  \nYou’re invited to join the Care for Creation Tapestry Thread in reading Not Too Late: Changing the Climate Story from Despair to Possibility this October. The book strikes a balance between defeatism and overconfidence\, written about by folks who genuinely want us to better know what we are talking about when we talk about climate change. This study will deepen participants’ understanding of climate change.  \nClimate is an issue that touches everything. Its study involves history\, culture\, economics\, law and justice issues\, race and gender politics\, and so many branches of science. There are so many facets to look at\, from the state of the climate movement\, the shift to renewable energy\, and the policy issues being decided at every level of government. This book touches on many of the topics in timely fashion with information that we need now\, especially heading into the voting booths this November. \nJoin us in reading the material and come with questions of your own!  The discussion sessions will be recorded\, but will not be immediately ready for review the next week. The moderators will be Dr. William Franz and Sr. Phyllis Cox\, Care for Creation Tapestry Thread Co-Leaders. DESCRIPTION:October 4-5\, 2023 \nHoliday Inn & Suites North Beach\, Virginia Beach \nThe First Call Theological Education Committee invites rostered ministers who have been ordained 1- 10 years to Iron Sharpens Iron: Leading and Learning Together as an extension of the Gathering of the Ministerium in October. \nThe Rev. Dr. Dawn Alitz will lead  programming on Wednesday afternoon – focusing on taking what participants learned and explored over the previous days and turning it into practical application for our ministry. There will also be time for small-group discussions around self-selected topics that are applicable for your ministry. And of course\, time for fellowship and worship. \nFor First Call Rostered Ministers in their first three years of ministry\, the Synod will cover the additional cost for the event (both the hotel room and the $40 event fee)\, as it is part of First Call Theological Education instead of the annual retreat.
