SUMMARY:Feeding the Multitude: World Hunger 50 Bible Study
DESCRIPTION:Feeding the Multitude \nWorld Hunger 50 Bible Study  \nLed by Pastor Kelly Bayer Derrick \n  \nSeptember 16 & 23\, 2024 \n7:00pm – 8:15pm ET\, Zoom \n  \n“Everyone ate until they were full. They filled twelve baskets with the leftover pieces of bread and fish. About five thousand had eaten.” (Mark 6.42-44 CEB) \n  \nAll four gospels writers record the miracle of Jesus feeding the multitudes – with just five loaves of bread and two pieces of fish! From the everyday staples of bread and fish\, provided by the crowd from what they already had\, Jesus fed the multitudes – with food\, with compassion\, and with community. God is a God of abundance!  \n  \nJoin Pastor Kelly as we engage this miracle story together. Let’s explore the ways that Jesus invites us into this great picnic\, joining in God’s mission of abundant life as together we also share food\, compassion\, and community.  \n  \nRegistration will close on Wednesday\, September 11. \n  \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Maternal Mortality Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:Maternal Mortality Health Equity Zoom \nMonday\, December 11\, 7pm \n  \nThe Virginia Synod Tapestry Team and the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP) invite you to a Zoom gathering mobilizing the Virginia Lutheran community to take the first step to address Virginia’s maternal mortality crisis.  \n  \nWe will Learn. Pray. Act. together as God’s people:  \n\nLearn about the maternal mortality crisis in Virginia\, and the fact that Black women in Virginia are dying roughly two and a half times more frequently than their counterparts. \nPray together – in word and deed – as we do justice\, love kindness\, and walk humbly with God TODAY. “Today salvation has come to this house.” (Luke 19.9a)\nAct by advocating for the proposed bill in the 2024 General Assembly to mandate unconscious bias training for all VA healthcare workers. \n\n#LearnPrayAct \nRegistration closes on Thursday\, December 7 at 3pm. \nRegister here. \n  \nMaternal mortality is the death of a woman during pregnancy\, at delivery\, or soon after delivery. The U.S. maternal mortality rate exceeds that in other high-income countries and the gap is worsening. This rate is exceptionally high for Black women. Black women in Virginia dying roughly two and a half times more frequently than their counterparts. Eliminating these disparities necessitates addressing cultural competency and unconscious bias in health care settings. \nResources about the Unconscious Bias Training  Bill in the 2024 General Assembly \nVICPP > Health Equity > Unconscious Bias \nThe Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy: All Faiths Believe in Justice \n

SUMMARY:Climate Change in Context
DESCRIPTION:Climate Change in Content: Q&A with the Experts \nSunday\, October 15 – 7pm – Zoom \nAs the 2023 Season of Creation celebration comes to a close\, Tapestry is excited to announce a once-in-a-lifetime chance to talk about climate change and creation justice from a distinctively Lutheran perspective with two experts in the field. \nOn Sunday\, October 15 at 7pm the Virginia Synod Tapestry Team will host a discussion of climate change with Dr. Chad Rimmer\, newly installed Rector of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary\, and Phoebe Morad\, Executive Director of Lutherans Restoring Creation. The conversation will be based on your questions about climate change. You can submit questions in your registration or send them to Sr. Phyllis Cox\, ELCA Deacon\, at peacocks2360@gmail.com.  \nBoth Dr. Rimmer and Mrs. Morad are eco-theologists who can give us better insight on how best to incorporate climate change and creation justice into your ministry\, so the more questions we can provide for them\, the more spirited and spirit-led the conversation will be.  \nRegistration for this event will close on Thursday\, October 12. \nRegister here.  \n

DESCRIPTION:October 4-5\, 2023 \nHoliday Inn & Suites North Beach\, Virginia Beach \nThe First Call Theological Education Committee invites rostered ministers who have been ordained 1- 10 years to Iron Sharpens Iron: Leading and Learning Together as an extension of the Gathering of the Ministerium in October. \nThe Rev. SUMMARY:Gathering of the Ministerium
DESCRIPTION:Leading with Hope in a Season of Change; \nWalking the Road Together \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Gathering of the Ministerium is an annual event for the rostered ministers\, interns\, vicars\, and spouses who are living or serving in the Virginia Synod. \nGather to meet\, reconnect\, worship\, relax\, learn\, sing\, pray and play together while overlooking the ocean. The Gathering of the Ministerium includes valuable continuing education for all rostered ministers. Everyone who attends\, whether in person or online\, will receive 10 CEUs. \nAs Christian leaders\, our preaching and teaching centers around a message of hope and resurrection. There are times\, however\, when it seems difficult to walk this road ourselves\, let alone walking it with others. Over these sessions\, we’ll spend some time in the text of the Road to Emmaus; exploring how questions and coaching can accompany us as leaders and equip us for walking with our people more deeply. \nFor more information or to register go to: https://vasynod.org/gathering-of-the-ministerium/

SUMMARY:Beyond Thoughts & Prayers: A Commemoration of Moses the Black
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Thoughts & Prayers: A Commemoration of Moses the Black \nAugust 28 – 7pm – Zoom \n  \nMoses the Black lived in the 4th century. He was\, before his conversion\, known as a robber and scoundrel.  He was considered a worthless blight in his society. Hiding from local authorities\, Moses appealed to Scetis monks to give him sanctuary. Observing their peace\, contentment\, and faith practice\, Moses was baptized and became a dedicated member of their monastic community. Moses the Black became an example of faith through his actions even beyond peers and elders. His faith inspired his martyrdom\, which saved his community. Moses the Black is commemorated for his life of faith on August 28th. To coincide with his commemoration\, Tapestry invites you to gather to consider initiatives of Faith and Action.  \n  \nThere have been 248 tragedies characterized as mass shootings in 2023. Sympathies for the victims and their families have been expressed by a call for our thoughts and prayers. Tapestry invites you on August 28th at 7:00 p.m. to join in brainstorming initiatives for our congregations\, conferences\, and synod that may support our communities with actions of faith beyond sympathies of thoughts and prayer.  \n  \nRegistration has closed. If you would like to attend\, please email Pastor Colleen Montgomery at montgomery@vasynod.org by 12noon on August 28 to get the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Power in the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:2023 Summer Power in the Spirit: Seeking and Finding \nPower in the Spirit will be at Roanoke College\, July 13-15\, 2023. \nIn the gospels\, Jesus draws crowds wherever he goes. People who would otherwise have nothing to do with each other are drawn together in the practice of seeking him. We will look at a vision of the church that has this kind of seeking at its center. Come and explore the theme of Seeking and Finding as it appears in Scripture and in our own journeys of faith. Together we will see how our seeking Jesus (and his seeking us) is the common ground we need to love one another across all the issues and life experiences that threaten to divide us. \nThe Rev. Dr. Mary Hinkle Shore will be the Keynote Speaker\, Rev. Dr. Steven Tuell will be the Bible Study leader\, and Michael Benshish will be the musician. \nFor more information or to register go to: https://vasynod.org/power-in-the-spirit/
