SUMMARY:Speaking in Love: A Truth in Love Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Truth in Love Workshop #2:  Speaking in Love \nSunday\, April 23\, 2023 – 5-8pm \nLiving in community is based on making and maintaining authentic connections.  And authentic connections are made through healthy communication.  Whether a community is in the midst of conflict or is just going about its day-to-day business\, it is important to communicate well and to speak in love.  This workshop will begin with assisting participants to know themselves better\, which will allow them to enter into “compassionate communication\,” leading to the formation of authentic connections. \nBeing heard\, understood\, and accepted is one of the most powerful gifts that we can grant to others – which we explored in the first Truth in Love Workshop.  Having others hear\, understand\, and accept you and your point of view is also a vital component to healthy communication and conflict management.  With this in mind we will be focusing on Emotional Intelligence and Nonviolent Communication which are needed tools to speak to one another in love. \nThis is a digital workshop.  The cost per person is $25.  There is a discount for multiple participants from the same congregation.  Participation in Workshop #1 is not required to participate in Workshop #2.  This workshop is open to rostered ministers and laypersons. \nIf you have any questions please contact Pr. Liz Radtke at radtke@vasynod.org or540-521-7721 \nRegistration has closed.

SUMMARY:Social Media for Ministry 202: Discoverable Algorithms & Vertical Video
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 9 \n7-8:15pm EST – Zoom \nTaught by Pastor Colleen Montgomery  \n  \nBeing a friend\, follower\, or subscriber to someone on social media is no longer the only way to connect. All major social media platforms are building in discoverable algorithms to connect people with new creators based on their interests and interactions. Understanding how this new type of algorithm works and being able to create content for it (vertical video) is a huge opportunity for evangelism for churches of all sizes.  \n  \nIn this class you’ll learn what makes discoverable algorithms different from their predecessors and the basics of how to brainstorm\, film\, and edit vertical video. Edited recordings of the class will be shared with the registration list.  \nContact Pastor Colleen with questions at montgomery@vasynod.org \n  \nRegister Here.

SUMMARY:Light Dawns: Human Trafficking and the Image of God
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays at 7:00pm-8:15pm \nNovember 3\, 10\, 17 \n  \nLight dawns on a weary world \nwhen eyes begin to see \nall people’s dignity. \n(ELW 726; Mary Louise Bringle\, b. 1953) \n  \nGod has made all of humanity in God’s holy image – we are ALL beloved. Our primary identity is Child of God. Human trafficking and exploitation are linked to our identity and to the sexual brokenness of our world. Too often\, God’s children can become vulnerable to being exploited by others who will gladly “fill in the blanks” on who we are\, what we are good for\, and whose we are (their property).  \nYou are invited to join Pastor Kelly Bayer Derrick (Assistant to the Bishop of the Virginia Synod) and Lisa Kersey (Executive Director of Freekind) as together we engage God’s Word to shine the light of truth on the sin and evil of human trafficking and on the hope\, dignity\, and inherent worth found in our identity as God’s beloved. \n  \nTo be added to the study between October 28-Nov 2\, please email Pastor Colleen Montgomery at montgomery@vasynod.org.

SUMMARY:Women in the Gospel of John
DESCRIPTION:Women in the Gospel of John\nBible Study by Pastor Kelly Bayer Derrick\nTuesdays Sept 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\, and Oct 4\n\n7-8:15pm – Zoom \n\nThe Gospel of John is filled with stories of Jesus’ encounters with women – Mary\, the Mother of Jesus; Martha of Bethany; the Samaritan woman at the well; Mary Magdalene; and many others. From these experiences we learn much about Jesus (Martha tells us he is “the Messiah\, the Son of God”!) and much about how Jesus calls us all to follow\, to witness\, and to lead (Mary Magdalene is the first to proclaim: “I have seen the Lord!”). Expanded from Pastor Kelly’s Power in the Spirit Workshop\, this study invites participants to dig deeper.\n  \n\nParticipants are welcome to attend just one session or all five.\n\n  \nThe registration link is closed\, but you are welcome to join the study still! Email Pastor Colleen Montgomery if you would like to be added to the list. montgomery@vasynod.org.

SUMMARY:Assembling Here\, There\, And Anywhere
DESCRIPTION:Assembling Here\, There\, And Anywhere \nLiturgy Workshop for Hybrid Worship \nAugust 23 – 3pm EST – Zoom  \nLed by Pastor Colleen Montgomery  \n  \nYour congregation’s Sunday assembly is no longer just in here in the sanctuary. The assembly is also there in homes and anywhere that folks worship from. This workshop will help worship leaders revise a liturgy to be inclusive of these places and worship experiences. Participants will be divided into work groups to focus on the four parts of Lutheran liturgy: gathering\, word\, meal\, and sending. Each work group will share their ideas and have time to ask questions of the other groups. All will get access to liturgy and rubrics worked on during this session.  \n  \nThis workshop will not be recorded because of the collaborative nature of our time together. We’re going to work!  \n  \nThis workshop will not discuss the why\, how\, or technology set-up of hybrid worship. Participants will start from the foundation that hybrid worship is happening and this focused work on the liturgy is a necessary step in inclusive hybrid worship.  \n  \nThis workshop will not delve into the theological debate of digital communion. The focus is on the practical and theological adaption of liturgy for communities that are engaging hybrid in worship including communion already. \n  \nRegistration is closed. If you would like to attend\, email Pastor Colleen at montgomery@vasynod.org.

SUMMARY:Power in the Spirit (Summer 2022)
DESCRIPTION:Power in the Spirit: July 14-16\, 2022  \nWhat does it mean to be a leader in the Church and a follower of Jesus? The words of Saint Thomas reveal a disciple whose faith in Jesus makes him willing to go where Jesus goes\, even when danger and death are real possibilities. For Thomas\, it’s better to be unsafe with Jesus than to stay behind as Jesus heads into dangerous places. For the Church today\, we just may be called to a similar faith that goes with Jesus—even into danger. At Power in the Spirit 2022 we’ll explore these themes\, and more! \nCome and learn! Come for fellowship! Come to serve your neighbor!
