Dear people of the Virginia Synod,

We have been in the process of thinking ahead to a transition in leadership for synodical Ministry with Youth and Young Adults for some time, and I’m now ready to announce that I will be concluding my call as Synodical Director for Youth and Young Adult Ministries, effective August 15, 2026, and moving into retirement.

The Synod staff and other leadership are in conversation to develop a transition process, including plans for securing a new Director. More information about that will be available as the year progresses.

I give immense thanks for the many partners I have been blessed to share ministry with, especially on the staffs of the three Bishops I have served under, as well as the countless youth and adults who have been in leadership and service as part of our common mission. The support and investment of the people of the Virginia Synod is truly extraordinary, and I have confidence that it will remain strong for many years to come.

The Virginia Synod will always remain in my heart and prayers as this next year unfolds and beyond. Blessings to all who share my love for Christ’s call to this ministry and its people.

Pastor David K. Delaney

Director for Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us that:

For everything that happens in life – there is a season, a right time for everything under heaven. (The Voice)

For the past 24 years, The Rev. Dr. Dave Delaney has provided leadership for ministry to the youth and young adults of the Virginia Synod.

My first acquaintance with Dave was when I was on the Virginia Synod staff providing leadership for ACTS and Roots and Wings. Dave was my supervisor.

The Holy Spirit has equipped Dave with gifts appropriate for working with young people: musical expertise, rapport with youth of all ages, extensive biblical knowledge for selecting relevant youth event themes, encouragement of youth in their spiritual growth and providing opportunities for leadership development.

Dave has provided the caliber of youth ministry that other Synods send their youth leadership to come, observe and learn.

Thank you, Dave, for living out God’s call on your life through youth ministry. We offer our prayers on your retirement in this next season of your life.

Blessings,

Bishop Phyllis Milton
