If you’ve grown up in Virginia or had kids grow up in Virginia, you’ve probably heard of Caroline Furnace. This Lutheran camp and retreat center has set a daunting goal: to find 100 people, pairs, or groups to commit to giving $50 a month by Sept. 1.
Caroline Furnace, located north of Harrisonburg, has undergone a recent change of leadership this year with Reuben Todd stepping in as the new executive director. Todd believes that the camp is vital in the faith journey of the campers because “spiritual growth happens outside your normal routine.”

If you walk around camp during the summer you will find kids who have been coming during the summer for years and have seen a positive impact in their own lives. The stories may vary, but one thing’s for sure–kids love Caroline Furnace.
“Honestly, I feel really at home here,” said MiKayla Hunt from Culpepper, Va. who has been coming to Caroline Furnace for 8 years.
Not only is the camp important for the kids, it impacts the counselors as well. Todd explained that Caroline Furnace is where many people who want to go into full time ministry practice leadership in the church community for the very first time.
“Investment in this camp is investment in the future of the church, church leadership and church membership,” Todd said.
