“What’s trending?”  Trends are not really passing fads; they often indicate what the future will be like, and how reality is changing.  And sometimes that’s what those preparing for a call wonder: “What’s trending in calls to serve as a pastor, diaconal minister, deaconess, or associate in ministry?”

The 2015 VA Synod Vocations Conference is happy to feature our own Bishop Jim Mauney, who will offer presentations on what he’s seeing as trends in recent calls issued by congregations.

The Vocations Conference is sponsored by the VA Synod Candidacy Committee, and is a great event for those in seminary AND for those considering seminary in order to prepare for ELCA rostered service as a pastor, diaconal minister, deaconess, or associate in ministry.  This year’s Vocations Conference will be held on August 11-12, at the Eagle Eyrie Conference Center near Lynchburg.

Pastors of inquirers and registered candidates are encouraged to come to hear about the candidacy process first hand and to share their insights about the candidate.

PASTORS and CAMPUS PASTORS, if you know of someone who has expressed some interest in becoming a pastor, diaconal minister, deaconess, or associate in ministry, please get that person to the Vocations Conference!  It is seldom too early for an inquirer to get to know the Candidacy Committee and the ELCA Candidacy process.

The Virginia Synod Candidacy Committee wishes to be in relationship with an applicant for 13 months before he or she enters seminary!

The Virginia Synod’s Vocations Conference allows time for learning and growth through presentations and small group discussions.  It provides time for inspiration through worship.  It allows time for reflection, conversation, and questions concerning one’s call and gifts for ministry through ample opportunities for fellowship and free time.  This conference allows persons who are wondering what professional ministry in the church is like to spend time with those who have experience within the church.  It provides a retreat setting for helping individuals discern their gifts for ministry.  The conference is also a reunion time for seminarians with the Candidacy Committee.
