Pentecost & Prayer

The Virginia Synod is blessed to be in a companion synod relationship with the New Guinea Islands District of Papua New Guinea. Together we live as God’s people and as faithful followers of Jesus. We support one another in sharing the gospel, praying for God’s people, sharing the sacraments, and living as disciples.

Geographically, the NGI District comprises 4 church circuits (like Virginia Synod conferences) that align with PNG provinces. Kimbe and Bialla Circuits are in the West New Britain Province. Rabaul is in East New Britain and Kavieng Circuit is in the New Ireland Province.

On May 24, 2026 we will join with our siblings in PNG for a Prayer Partnership Sunday.  We invite all ELCA congregations across Virginia to join with congregations in the New Guinea Islands in a time of prayer for one another.  On this Pentecost Sunday we encourage you to pray for the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us in our ministries.  From one side of the world to another, we will pray for each other!  Of course, we also invite you to pray for our partnership in ministry throughout the year within your congregations, maybe weekly, monthly, or quarterly.

We have grouped our conferences in Virginia with the Circuits in PNG if you would like to pray specifically for these regions that we attempted to arrange geographically.   Here is the structure:

  • Piedmont and Coastal Conferences with Kavieng Circuit
  • Valley Conferences with Rabaul Circuit
  • Blue Ridge Conferences with Kimbe Circuit
  • Appalachia Conferences with Bialla Circuit

Come Holy Spirit – as we journey this road together!
